A China Eastern flight from Sydney-Australia to Shanghai had to turn around for an emergency landing to the same Sydney international airport  after engine failure caused a mid-air emergency.

The Flight MU736 that had  left Sydney  for Shanghai at 8.30pm on Sunday 11th June evening was forced to return to Sydney where it landed safely and passengers were evacuated without any injuries, said Kathy Zhang, an official  at China Eastern Airlines.

Images show a huge hole in the engine casing of the Airbus A330 which was forced to circle for an hour before touching down safely.

A spokeswoman for Rolls-Royce, which manufactured the plane’s Trent 700 series engines, said in a statement: “We are aware of the incident and will be working closely with our customer and relevant partners to understand the cause of the issue.”
